GEAR GUIDE

SHOTGUN
The right upland bird gun is easy to carry, quick to swing, mount & fire without creating too much recoil. A pump action has greater capacity to carry and fire more shells. Choose the ubiquitous 12 gauge or a 16 on a small frame.

AMMUNITION
Pick shells that match the gauge size of your gun. Birdshot contains smaller pellets. Select #9, #8 , #7.5. These will carry better through the thick brush grouse inhabit. Your shotgun is marked “x gauge x inch”. Inch lengths including: 2.5, 2.75, 3 and 3.5. Never fire shells longer than your marking.

FIELD DRESSING KIT
You'll want to clean these birds in the field at the end of your hunt. Some gallon size zip-loc bags and wet wipes will make clean work.

GAME SHEARS

while maintaining dexterity.

JACKET / VEST
A great all around small game vest is durable, water repellent and features ample organization for ammo and spacious game pockets.

UNDERWEAR
Ex Officio, always. Wear one pair all weekend with the most comfortable, breathable, quick drying briefs.

BOTTOMS
A great everyday then into the outdoors pant has a comfortable cut, 4 way stretch tech fabric and a range of crossover colors.

SOCKS
Wool socks transfer moisture most efficiently, avoid odor and continue to insulate when wet. Select greater weight and cuff height for lower temperatures.

FOOTWEAR
There can be many miles before a bird is encountered. You’ll want boots that are light, tough, and waterproof.
Any Fleet-Farm will do.
